Chapter Five

“How many times?”

There was another sigh, this time it tickled through the hair on his shoulder as Sébastien rolled over to face Gabe.

“It’s an infinite process, Gabriel. Not even I remember everything. And what I do remember is losing you. Over and over again. Every time you died, but came back in another body. I would search and search for your new form, as I knew your soul. Sometimes we connected, sometimes we didn’t.”

Sébastien’s voice cracked. “The moment you walked into my office in Manhattan I knew who you were. But you didn't remember our lives together and that was a very difficult moment.” He paused. “Yes, I’d finally found you in this lifetime, but your memories of our past lives weren’t there. Normally, the second we meet again, you remember.”

Gabe was confused. “If in the past I’ve always remembered us, why is this time different?”

“If I knew that answer, we wouldn’t be here. We’d have made love on the floor of my office over a year ago and moved in together the next day.” Sébastien smiled wryly. “Instead, it’s taken nearly a year to get to this point with me befriending and wooing you to France with a job offer. I’d hoped the familiarity of our past life together, where our journey began, would trigger your memories. Until last night, I had almost given up and thought you would never remember.”

While Sébastien sounded so certain of their past, their future together, Gabe still needed more answers. “You spoke of previous times we found each other. This isn’t the only one?”

He felt Sébastien shake his head. “No, this isn’t the only time we’ve reunited. The last time was during World War I.”

Surprise colored Gabe’s voice. “So long ago?”

Sébastien laughed. “In the infinite scope of things, it was just last week.” Sébastien trailed his fingers lightly over Gabe’s chest, the feeling calming. “Even during the most trying times, we managed to find each other. That time, you were a dashing British soldier and I fought alongside you against the Germans. After the war, we retired to a small village in Provence and lived quite happily until we both died peacefully in our sleep of old age.”

The small lines around Sébastien’s eyes crinkled as he seemingly relived the memories.

“People didn’t think it was strange two men living together, not being related?”

“If any of the villagers questioned it, they never spoke out it aloud. We were war heroes. You had lost an arm in the Battle of Verdun and I suffered from what today doctors would call Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Back then we just called it battle fatigue.” A shrug. “It was a simpler time and we kept to ourselves.”

Gabe listened with bewilderment. He couldn’t imagine living during the First World War. He’d heard stories as a child from his great-grandfather when they would visit the old man in his nursing home. But Gabe had actually lived during it? Fought in the war?

“I can see you are still not convinced,” Sébastien’s comment interrupted Gabe’s train of thought.
